Some days being a gamer makes me want to sign up for a support group to kick the expensive habit. Other days, I want to celebrate and make the transition to a shut in with a rich virtual life. Today I’m thinking I want to be a modern day hermit with a decked out gaming cave. You see, there’s good news from the gaming front this morning. The Playstation 3 is rumored to get a significant price drop, and the PSP 2 is beginning to materialize.

PSP 2

Via a network of industry spies, we learned that the PSP 2 is most likely slated for release this fall. Regarding specs, the PSP 2 isn’t going to have a UMD optical drive. So if there isn’t going to be a battery-devouring optical drive, how do we get our games and movies?

Simple. Like we get everything else—via download from the internet. For airports and impulses buys, Sony will probably offer some games and movies on memory cards.

Playstation 3

Happily, there’s plenty of reason to believe that Sony’s pricey PS3 is looking at a price drop. First off, GameStop is rolling out a $50 off promo on March 3. Double that up with investor demands that the PS3 be made more competitive and rumors of a budget model without the Blu-ray drive, and you could convince a jury that, yes, the PS3’ll be cheaper, and soon.

But, a PS3 without a Blu-ray optical drive, how do we get our games and movies?!

Simple. The same way we get a large portion of our games and movies currently—via download. Sony is already well ahead of the game in terms of digital game delivery, and hey, if that would mean a shiny new PS3 for $250, I’m sure most of us could make do without the Blu-ray.

I know I could.
