Is the Sony PSP2 Coming? Does it Really Have Time Travel and Teleportation Capability?

Once the video game rumor mill starts a grinding, there's no stopping it. The fresh grist this morning concerns the forthcoming arrival of the Sony PSP 2. IGN cites sources that confirm that the PSP 2 is indeed coming to the market sometime in the not-so-distant future. Sony’s been shooting around surveys that suggest the iPSP 2 is in development too.

Pretty credible rumor grist, no? The thing is though, some Sony Deepthroat is calling the rumor patently false:

“Clearly, being a quiet time of year, many, what we thought to be credible websites, are making up stories about PSP2, and how it allows you to teleport across the globe, travel through time, and will be powered by the horns of baby rhinoceroses.”

The sarcasm in that response is as thick as molasses. It leads me to believe this shady character does not in fact represent Sony. But, on the off chance that this is Sony’s new PR angle, I have to take my hat off to them. What better way to nip a viral rumor in bud than to mock and belittle the rumor itself?

And if this snarky youth does in fact speak for Sony, we’re probably seeing the emergence of Web PR 2.0. No more reasonable exchanges between aristocrat PR folk. Instead of addressing rumors the way a nineteenth century nobleman addressed an invitation to a duel, PR people will dirty their hands in the muck of the interwebs along with the plebes.

I’d love to see high paid trollers roving the net looking to make fun of anyone with the gall to grasp at rumor straws of the next netbook killer, or nano-tastic iThing. I mean, doesn’t gadget lust and the tidal wave of gadget rumors it produces deserve a bit of good ol’ fashioned hazing?

I say yes indeed. And Sony, if you need soldiers in your intimidation and bullying strike force, drop me a line.

The still hypothetical PSP2 is going to feature a multi-touch interface a la iPhone, internet and a keyboard. No word on whether or not it is real, rumor or prototype.
